Before you pack
- Look at your fare: entry-level fares often limit carry-on or checked bags.
- Check size and weight limits for every airline on the trip.
- International trips can follow different allowances.
- Special items such as sports gear or medical equipment have their own rules.
When a bag is delayed, lost or damaged
- Report it to the airline at the airport and get a reference number.
- Keep boarding pass, baggage tag and receipts for essentials.
- Follow up with the airline’s baggage tracing tool or claims form.
- Ask about a refund of the checked bag fee. U.S. rules require it when a bag is not delivered within 12 hours of a domestic flight arriving at the gate (15 to 30 hours for international), if you file a mishandled baggage report.
